"The powers that be"

Frederick Roussel

First Verse

We built the prisons and society

We made our vision a reality

We made a fortune out of the poor

We gave amusements they simply adore

We hypnotised them to forget change

We took the burden of power away

We won't educate them but they'll survive

They'll think of nothing but comfort in life

We are the titan they look up to see

We know their weakness is hypocrisy

We took the winter, we paved the way

We made it Christmas every day

We shot the rebel for society

We gave them youth and immortality

We pushed the button, came home to grieve

We made it Heaven, Death was the key

Chorus

We are just the powers that be

We just want to give love today

We just wanna be happy

We wish all the joy love can bring

Second Verse

The blood and the treasure we took away

Granting a tyrant the world's sympathy

We send a message to those in need

Turning their want...into greed

Into the whip hand we place a bouquet

We make a memory from our fantasy

We made the gangster out of the poor

We gave them fashion that's worth dyin for

We're silent partners with a whore

We've been corrupted behind closed doors

We'll cheer the bleeding hearts up in exchange

If they give pleasure we'll give them fame

Chorus

We are just the powers that be

We just want to give love today

We just wanna be happy

We wish all the joy love can bring

"The powers that be"
